DOMESTIC HOT WATER

How it Works...

Solar Energy is absorbed by a south-facing collector and taken - via antifreeze - to an internal heat exchanger in the tank. Type of collectors and size of tank may vary depending on your particular situation and preference.

Back-up heating is provided in one of two ways.
The solar tank feeds the existing water heater which boosts the temperature if necessary. This arrangement works well if there is a large demand for hot water at times such a large bathtub or in a commercial situation. This disadvantage is more heat loss and more space used for 2 tanks.
A better way is using the element in the solar tank. This has the advantage of allowing the element thermostat to sense the solar tank temperature and avoid coming on because of standby losses when there is plenty of solar available.  Your “old” system works as a back-up for times when usage is high and solar energy low.

The residential domestic solar hot water system is a no-brainer both in terms of usability and cost-effectiveness.  A solar system will provide a minimum 70% of all your hot water needs and pay for itself in 5 - 7 years.
DOMESTIC HOT WATER - PRIORITY #1
REQUIREMENTS:  Southerly exposed roof/surface/side of building

COST:  A solar domestic hot water system usually pays for itself in 5 - 7 yrs.
(See below for current financial incentives).

LONGEVITY:  A lifetime.  Service recommended once every five years.
$AVINGS: There has never been a better time for solar. Marylanders currently pay as little as 50% of an installed solar system.
MD State provides a *30% grant and the Federal Government provides 30% in tax credits. Furthermore, ANNE ARUNDEL County residents can put the outstanding balance of their system as a property tax credit. Howard County residents have a further $1500 in grants bringing their costs down to only 40% of the total system cost. To intiate your grant go to

*there is currently a wait-list with MD State while additional funding is located.
